Art, meet science…
Origins
The Harmonic Breathwork Method™ was created in 2020 by award-winning health author Tom Granger.
In 2019, when Tom released his first book on breathing, the publisher would not allow the word “breathwork” to be included on the cover. Their reason? “That’s not a real word, and even if it is, no one has heard of it”
… How times have changed!
When his research on a second book about the power of slow, rhythmic breathing coincided with the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic, Tom felt a strong call to put his research into practice. He began offering free, online breathing sessions designed to support large groups to reduce stress, stay healthy, and recover the lost sense of community through breath… the first Breathe-In Harmony courses were born.
These sessions helped Tom to realise the unique power that music has when used to pace breathing, and experiment with the creative opportunity that it offers us for wellbeing
As the pandemic continued, and simple, easy-to-share wellbeing practices became more important than ever, Tom started collaborating with talented musicians from around the world to offer more and more music and began calling this new philosophy “Harmonic Breathwork” – a gentle counterpoint to the intense styles of breathwork that were becoming popular at the time.
Tom began compiling the supporting music in a library under the name Aria Breath, and mastering it in multiple nourishing speeds.
As the library grew, the word spread. The project has now been used, shared, and endorsed by the leaders in breathwork including James Nestor and Patrick McKeown, and even garnering collaboration requests from major celebrities in the world of music!
Today, Tom has trained hundreds of Aria Breath teachers all around the world to share Harmonic Breathwork – who in turn have helped introduce thousands more people to the practice and achieve profound calm own command.
With the creation of the cutting-edge Aria Breath app, we hope to wake even more people up to the power of slow breathing with music.

Conspiring with the world’s leading breath researchers
con-(together) spire-(breathe)
From neuroscientists, Nobel Prize winners and Olympic gold medallists, to yoga historians, Buddhist monks and legendary breathwork pioneers…
Tom has spent a decade tracking down and interviewing the leading minds in breathing science. He left no stone unturned in his search to create the breathing practice.
This project was created to turn what these geniuses have uncovered into something practical, adaptable, and accessible – for everyone to enjoy.
In short, the breathing practice may be emotive and enjoyable, but it is research-led. All of the music is based on the latest scientific studies into breathing rhythms, vocal instruction and soundscapes, and their individual impact on physical and mental well-being.
A personal note from Tom…
Hi there!
First of all, thank you so much for checking out Aria Breath, I hope you enjoy exploring the video explainers, free downloads, and music samples that we have here on the site!
The scientific findings we outline here are no doubt astonishing… but they are only half of the reason to practice…
… science, and ideas in general, can only take us so far.
One day, in my early twenties, I woke up with a terrible pain in both of my knees. Being young and healthy, I did nothing about it for weeks and hoped (assumed!) it would go away.
It didn’t.
Instead, it spread to my ankles, hips and lower back.
It stayed with me for the next ten years.
It affected my energy, mood, and mobility and meant that many of the things I enjoyed most in life were greatly diminished.
It’s not something that is often talked about, but chronic pain affects everything in your life, from your personal relationships to your ability to work. And when the cause is a mystery, which for many people it is, it’s easy to become despondent. But it can also become a teacher.
This might sound crazy… but even now, if I had a magic wand, I’m not sure I would change the history of this experience…
After doctors were zero help… and physio didn’t work… and medication was a disappointment, I turned to meditation as a last resort.
And it changed everything.
What I found went beyond just a relaxation technique, it taught me a new way of approaching my own, unwelcome, reality. One that coached kindness and curiosity to my real-time experience. With no other options, I threw myself into it fully.
The only problem was, I have a very hyperactive mind (the cost of being a “creative type”!), so sitting for hours in formal meditation didn’t just make the pain worse, but the level of steady concentration required was something I found next to impossible. An experience shared by many.
Although I was a passionately interested in meditation, it wasn’t until I combined my practice with breathwork whilst researching my fourth book that I really began to experience seismic changes in my experience... And so began an obsession that has become a life’s work!
Breathwork has allowed me to shift state, alter mood, and control my levels of concentration in a way that mindfulness alone never did.
Now, over a decade later, whilst I still experience bouts of strong pain, it is no longer chronic. And whilst meditation helped me to cope with the pain… I put this radical change down to the impact that breathwork has had on slowly shaping my nervous system.
As well as being a wonderful thing to explore, and a journey that has led to many of my most rewarding friendships, breathwork has been a comfort and a guide to me – it is my honour to be able to share it with you!
I began this concept, researched the researchers, and curated this library of art, music, and knowledge with love and care, over many years because I knew that it could one day genuinely change people’s lives, as it has done for me.
It has become the service that I wish I had had access to at the beginning of my own journey – I’d have got to where I am a lot quicker if it was!
It is my sincere wish that this project will create for you the peace, pleasure, and respite that these tracks and techniques have given me over the years of researching and testing them.
Wishing you all the best, wherever your journey takes you,
Tom
